Week 3 and counting...

I'm running out of good post titles.  Forgive me.  Now that I'm trying to get in a post a week and we don't really have themes for our school days, it's becoming increasingly hard to be creative.  So, hopefully, you'll let the title just slide by without real notice.

This week, Sawyer completed a new Dear Dragon book, Hayden finished up his 100th lesson in our math curriculum, and our France study came to an end.  It was a very productive week!

Language Arts
Sawyer's book for the week

He worked on writing the letters o and u, along with words that had the /ou/ sound.

We also talked about contractions.

Writing from our HWT booklet.

Hayden read a new easy reader - Teams are Neat - focusing on the long /e/ sound.
Here, he cut out pictures from the story and made up a sentence about what he saw in each one.

This is him copying down the sentences that he dictated to me.  It really bugs
him when he doesn't know how to spell a word correctly even if I'm not worried
about the spelling.  So, this eliminated that unnecessary step of frustration.

Working on the long /e/ sound spelled with ee, ea, and _e.

Building words from the three stacks of letter cards (consonants, vowels, and blends).
I had forgotten how much I really dislike this activity because it's so easy to
create incorrect words like the one pictured above and below.

See?  We need to come up with an alternative word building activity.
Math:
Sawyer's math this week consisted of MathSeeds and number games.
Putting number cards in order.

Matching numbers and quantities.

Number Memories.  Finding matches between the blue finger cards and the
pink tally mark cards.

Mixed up Cards.  With two rows of matching cards, he had to find the mixed
up cards and correct them.

Entering numbers on the abacus to match the place value card number.
It was supposed to be just the numbers 1-10, but that just seemed to easy for
him at this stage.  So we kicked it up a notch.  He wanted numbers in the 100's
but I wasn't ready to introduce the other side of the abacus just yet.

Writing all the numbers we've learned so far.
For Hayden, we continued with measuring.  A lot, unfortunately, which I forgot to take pictures of.  He worked on finding the diagonals of rectangles, measuring longer distances, and estimating amounts.

Measuring different sized rectangles to determine the length of the diagonals.

Ridiculous face after trying to learn about estimating amounts.
Social Studies:
The last of France.  It took us too long to get through this country, mainly because of the holidays.  But, it's done.  We can revisit it later when we've had ample opportunity to explore other countries as well.  Because, if you know me, you know I love France!
These are the books we used this week in our study of France.

After reading, Mirette on the High Wire, and looking at some youtube videos
of street performers in France, we made bean bags and started learning how
to juggle!

We learned about the French artist, Henri Rousseau.
Then, we worked on making jungle scenes with chalk pastels for the
background and magazines for the collage part.

Hayden's final product.

Sawyer's final product.
